Infiltration won the first two Premier Tournaments of the season (Final Round and NorCal Regionals) and has already qualified for Capcom Cup. Tokido took 2nd place at both events and has taken 2nd or 3rd at every CPT event he has participated in this year, always just a short distance from victory. CEO 2016 Highlights

CEO is always a grand spectacle, and CEO 2016 lived up to that reputation. Even through the live stream you could feel the energy from the event. As with prior CEOs the theme of the event was wrestling, with the main stage set up like a wrestling ring with ropes you had to climb through to enter, player entrances complete with smoke, and even Canadian pro wrestler Kenny Omega being a prominent feature! The Street Fighter action was thrilling as well, so be sure to check out our videos page to catch up on what you missed. In the end the top 8 was once again dominated by players from east Asia. Liquid|NuckleDu, the only player not from Asia to make top 8, was the last US player standing at CEO and he was eliminated by Japan’s YOUDEAL MJS|Haitani, finishing 5th place overall. In the end the battle between 1st and 2nd came down to two players who have been big rivals in the 2016 Capcom Pro Tour season: Japan’s Tokido and South Korea’s RZR|Infiltration, with the latter coming out on top all year prior to CEO 2016.

It Was Only a Matter of Time: Tokido Wins First Premier in 2016

We’ve said it not once but twice in previous Premier highlight posts that it was only a matter of time before Tokido won a Premier Tournament this season. While it is true that he had developed a trend for taking 2nd or 3rd so far this year up until now, in our view that was a good thing. Tokido has been consistently solid all year, being seemingly only one or two small steps away from being on top at each event. His road to Grand Finals was not an easy one, with several of his matches being tough slogs. His match against BST|Daigo Umehara is just one example of a hard fought victory in top 8.

Tokido (Japan) vs BST|Daigo Umehara (Japan) was a real slugfest.

Tokido beats his 2016 Nemesis, RZR|Infiltrataion, to Secure Victory

Not only did Tokido take 1st place at CEO, he did it against South Korea’s RZR|Infiltration, who seems to have been Tokido’s nemesis so far this year. Infiltration defeated Tokido in the Grand Finals of Final Round 19 and NorCal Regionals 2016. At CEO, Tokido was knocked into the Losers Bracket by Infiltration in Winners Finals and it seemed like the pattern might repeat. However, they met again in Grand Finals and not only did Tokido come out on top, but it was in rather convincing fashion. After Tokido won the first set to reset the bracket (Tokido was fighting out of the Losers Bracket), Infiltration seemed almost at a loss for much of the second set. Tokido even won the final round to secure the win with a perfect. Infiltration, who seemed unbeatable early this year, is now shown to be human after all.
